Behaviour Support Practice (BSP)
A person’s behaviour can be influenced by their environment, experiences, relationships, communication needs, health, routines, and the way they are supported.
Our Behaviour Support Practice (BSP) works with NDIS participants, families, carers, support workers, and other professionals to better understand behaviours of concern and develop positive, practical strategies that support safety, independence, participation, and quality of life.
Rather than focusing only on changing behaviour, we take the time to understand the person behind it.
Our goal is to create supports that respect each individual’s needs, preferences, rights, strengths, and goals.
What Is Behaviour Support?
Behaviours can sometimes communicate an unmet need, discomfort, frustration, difficulty understanding a situation, challenges with communication, or other factors affecting a person’s everyday life.
By understanding what may be contributing to the behaviour, appropriate strategies can be developed to support the participant and the people around them.
Behaviour Support may involve observing patterns, understanding triggers, identifying environmental factors, strengthening communication, developing new skills, and supporting families and support teams to respond in a consistent and positive way.
At Re.Connect Support Services, every approach is tailored to the individual.
Understanding Behaviours Of Concern
They may affect a participant’s safety, relationships,
independence, participation in the community, or ability to engage in everyday activities.
Instead of asking only, “How do we stop this behaviour?”, Behaviour Support looks more closely at questions such as:
- What is happening before the behaviour occurs?
- What might the person be trying to communicate?
- Are there unmet needs?
- Are there environmental triggers?
- Are communication difficulties contributing?
- What happens after the behaviour?
- What strategies have already been tried?
- What changes could make everyday situations
- easier or safer?
Behaviour Support Services We Offer
circumstances, goals, and support needs. Our team can assist with:
Behaviour Assessments
We work to understand the behaviour, when and where it occurs, possible triggers, contributing factors, and what the behaviour may be communicating.
Connecting With Services And Supports
We can help you explore NDIS providers, community organisations, health services, mental health services, and other mainstream supports that may be relevant to your needs.
Behaviour Support Plans
We can develop individualised Behaviour Support Plans that provide clear and practical strategies for supporting the participant. These plans may include proactive strategies, communication approaches, environmental changes, skill-building strategies, and guidance for responding to behaviours of concern.
Interim Behaviour Support Plans
Where an interim plan is required, our practitioners can work with the participant and their support network to establish immediate strategies while a more comprehensive Behaviour Support Plan is being developed.
Positive Behaviour Support Strategies
Strategies may involve improving communication, developing coping skills, adjusting routines, changing environmental factors, supporting emotional regulation, or building greater independence.
Support For Families And Carers
Behaviour Support is often most effective when the people around the participant understand the strategies and feel confident using them. We work with families and carers to provide guidance, education, and practical support.
Training For Support Teams
Where appropriate, we can provide training and guidance to support workers and other members of the participant’s care team to help ensure strategies are understood and implemented consistently.
Monitoring And Reviewing Behaviour Support Plans
A Behaviour Support Plan should continue to respond to the participant’s changing needs. We can review progress, monitor strategies, identify what is working, and make adjustments where necessary.
Developing A Behaviour Support Plan
A Behaviour Support Plan is designed specifically around the participant.
It provides practical guidance for the people supporting them and aims to create greater consistency across their everyday environments.
A Behaviour Support Plan may include:
- Information about the participant’s strengths and preferences
- Identified behaviours of concern
- Possible triggers and contributing factors
- Communication needs
- Proactive support strategies
- Environmental strategies
- Skill-building approaches
- Strategies for responding safely when behaviours occur
- Responsibilities of people involved in the participant’s support
- Monitoring and review processes
The plan should be practical, understandable, and relevant to the participant’s everyday life.
Most importantly, the participant remains at the centre of the process.
Reducing Restrictive Practices
Positive Behaviour Support aims to improve quality of life and reduce the need for restrictive practices.
Where regulated restrictive practices are being considered or used, specific NDIS requirements, safeguards, reporting obligations, and state or territory authorisation processes may apply.
Behaviour Support Practitioners must consider positive alternatives and strategies that can help reduce and, wherever possible, eliminate the use of restrictive practices.
At Re.Connect Support Services, we are committed to approaches that respect the participant’s dignity, rights, safety, choice, and freedom.
Our focus remains on creating supportive environments and developing strategies that address the underlying reasons for behaviours of concern.
Working Together With Your Support Network
Behaviour Support rarely happens in isolation.
Consistency between the participant, family, carers, support workers, therapists, and other professionals can make a significant difference.
Our practitioners work collaboratively with the participant’s existing support network to ensure everyone has a clearer understanding of the strategies being recommended.
This collaborative approach can help reduce confusion, create more consistent responses, and give the participant greater stability across different environments.
